The Forty - Image of the Week . . . Tim Lowly “Listen”
Reminding us that the Lenten Season is a time when we leave out or take up practices that lead us to be more attentive to God, listening to the One who has drawn near.  How does this image help you carry the idea of been attentive to God?

Several different thoghts pop into my head when I see this pic.
1st — It reminds me of a joke I told some kids once about some Scouts that came upon an Indian knelt down in a road with his ear firmly pressed to the ground.
      The Indian said, “‘83 Trans-Am… 2 people in the car… 1 man & 1 woman… Dent on rear fender… Licence plate XYP782…”
The Scouts were amazed at the Indian’s insight & said, “You can tell all of that just by listening to the ground?”
The Indian said, “No, that’s what I saw as the car was driving away after running over my head!”

I never claimed it was a good joke! But it gives me the idea that if we don’t pay attention to God, to life, to circumstances, we can be run over. Flattened while, whatever (God, life, circumstances) passes us by.
Not listening, not paying attention can be very dangerous. Is this guy in the road listening for something coming, or is he watching something leaving as it just run him down?
2nd thought — This guy is, indeed, listening intently to the road, & listening for the clues as to what’s coming down the road. The more attentive he listens, the more details he’s able to pick out. Maybe it’s a large car coming. He can hear the weight of the car, the roar of the engine, the screeching of the tires.
Whatever’s coming, this guy knows it’s coming & he’ll be prepared for it’s arrival.
Jesus said His coming will overtake you like a thief in the night TO THOSE WHO AREN’T PAYING ATTENTION. That tells me that for those that are paying attention, it shouldn’t surprise us. Nothing God does should really surprise us. If we’re listening to Him, paying close attention to Him, He’ll tell us what’s up.

The resonating thought this picture speaks to me is that in the midst of solitude, the apparent retreat of life, and the coldness that threatens my warmth, desperation leads me to listen in ways that I dare not try when others are watching or the beauty of Spring amplifies God’s voice. I just want to hear some sign of life within the desolation that is my Winter. God, before the Spring comes and reminds me visually that You are here in no uncertain terms, urge me to stop and listen in desperation for Your life.
